Jaws PDF Server v3.0

Release Notes (Jaws PDF Server 2.11 to Jaws PDF Server 3.0):

New Features:

  • Jaws PDF Server runs as a service - Jaws PDF Server will now operate as a Windows service that allows Jaws PDF Server to run on a machine that no one is logged into.
  • "Persistent" virtual printers - the Jaws PDF Server virtual printers that are installed will now remain active even if Jaws PDF Server is shut down.
  • USB dongles - customers will have the choice of USB or parallel port dongles to use with Jaws PDF Server.
  • Integration with Jaws PDF Creator v3.0 - Jaws PDF Server is now integrated with the newest release of Jaws PDF Creator. This includes PDF 1.4 support among other enhancements and fixes. Please see the release notes for Jaws PDF Creator v3.0 for more information.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint macro - in addition to the Microsoft Word macro recently released, a PowerPoint macro has been added to Jaws PDF Server. These are used to retain document structures such as bookmarks and hyperlinks from the original document.
  • Import/export workflows - customers will now have the ability to import or export workflows from one system to another. This is quite useful for sharing workflows among multiple server installations and for backup purposes.
  • Windows XP Professional - is now a certified platform for use as a Jaws PDF Server server.
  • Sample workflow - a default workflow is now installed so when a user starts Jaws PDF Server the first time the design palette will not be blank. This allows quicker startup for the customer.
  • Context-sensitive help has been implemented.
  • Documentation - has been edited to add new features.
Please upgrade to or evaluate Jaws PDF Server v3.0 by contacting your local Authorized Reseller.

Fixes:

  • Microsoft Windows specific fixes in Jaws PDF Creator v3.0 are included in Jaws PDF Server 3.0.
  • Always embed/never embed fonts option has been implemented.
  • Access violation no longer occurs if a link is incomplete when exiting Jaws PDF Server.
  • Windows 2000/XP print drivers will be used as the default drivers, which solves the file naming problem observed.
  • Installation now accepts custom Start Menu / Program names.
  • Additional substitution codes have been added to the PDF post-processing function.
  • Jaws PDF Server now senses if Macintosh file services need to be activated and offers to do this for the user.
  • Various GUI fixes.
What's not in Jaws PDF Server v3.0

  • Windows 95 - Jaws PDF Server v3.0 will no longer support this platform. It will be possible for the user to use "hot folders" to submit jobs on this platform, however the use of virtual printers is not supported.
  • PDF 1.2 - due to the work to support device independent colors we no longer support creating PDF 1.2 files as these enhancements are not supported in PDF 1.2.
  • Mac OS X - we do not support this platform at this time for use as a server. Users may use "hot folders" from this platform provided they have the appropriate networking established.
