Why do I get an error when starting Jaws PDF Editor 4 after installing on Windows Vista?

Answer: This is a known issue when installing to some Vista systems where Jaws PDF Editor v4 will give the error 'PDFEditor.exe has stopped working' when the application is first started after installation.

If you have a 'Jaws PDF Editor' icon on your desktop, right click it and select 'Run as Administrator'.
This procedure should only need to be done once, and you should then be able to launch it in the usual way.

If you do not have the desktop icon. locate the 'PDFEditor.exe' file under 'Program Files\Global Graphics\Jaws PDF Desktop Suite\Jaws PDF Editor'.
Note: When PDF Editor is part of the PDF Desktop Suite, the install folder may be in the following location:
'C:\Program Files\Global Graphics\Jaws PDF Desktop Suite\Jaws PDF Editor'

Right click the 'PDFEditor.exe' file and select 'Run as Administrator', as above. (Only needs to be done once)

The pages I insert are blank. Why?

Answer: If you are using Jaws PDF Editor v3.0 please contact technical support. Directions for contact are in the last FAQ.

If you are using Jaws PDF Editor v2.5:
We have a patch for you that is designed to take care of your blank page issue. The basic instructions are as follows:
   * 1. Close Jaws PDF Editor if it is running.
   * 2. Using Windows Explorer open the folder where you have installed PDF Editor. The default location for PDF Editor is: C:\Program Files\Global Graphics\Jaws PDF Editor\
   * 3. In the Jaws PDF Editor folder create a new folder called Backup.
   * 4. Copy all the files in your Jaws PDF Editor folder except the Resources folder into the Backup folder. Note: Copy the files, do not move them. This procedure will allow you to restore PDF Editor to its original state should you wish to do this after applying the patch.
   * 5. Unzip the PDF Editor 2_5a Patch.zip file into a temporary location, for example, C:\temp\Editor2.5\ .
   * 6. Copy the unzipped files from the temporary location to your Jaws PDF Editor folder, overwriting any files there which have the same name.
   * 7. Delete the temporary unzip folder (from step 5).
   * 8. Restart PDF Editor.
There is a link to the patch under the 'Version 2.5' section on our download page at: http://www.jawspdf.com/download/previous.html#editor

If the above does not resolve the issue, then the files you are inserting may have some sort of encryption or security on them. Remove all security, save it out as a new name and then insert again. You should now be able to see the pages. this is not as common a resolve as the first solution.

I have my page set to Fit Width, but when I open the Navigation Pane, the Fit Width settings are not automatically updated?

Answer: In Ediotr v1.x, Fit Page and Fit Width are "shortcuts" to the best zoom level to fit the page to the screen based on the current document window size. If the window size changes - whether you re-size the window or open the Navigation Pane, the zoom level does not update automatically.

Error: "...File does not begin with '%PDF” error message when I try to open some files?

Answer:
This error message can result when PDF files are sent using some older e-mail systems.
If you received the PDF via e-mail, asking the sender to zip or stuff the file and resend it can eliminate this message.
If you received the file via AOL do one of the following:
* Upgrade to America Online 5.0 or later.
* Ask the sender to resend the PDF file with MIME encoding enabled in the e-mail application. AOL's software will automatically decode the MIME file and place the decoded *.pdf file in the same folder containing the encoded version.
* If AOL is unable to decode a MIME-encoded file, it creates a file name with a .mme extension. AOL recommends that you download the *.mme file and decode it with WinCode (for Windows) or Decoder (for Mac OS); both WinCode and Decoder are available from Etresoft's Web site at www.etresoft.com.
If these options do not solve the problem, refer to the AOL software documentation or contact AOL.

When I merge single page PDF files together the pages display in Adobe Acrobat as 1 (1 of x), 1 (2 of x), 1 (3 of x)... Why?

Answer: The page numbering you are speaking of are only displayed in Adobe Acrobat at this time. Jaws PDF Editor does not have the ability to display these numbers. This happens when you generate 1 page documents using Jaws PDFCreator and then combine them. To eliminate this problem, create the first PDF file with a minimum of 2 pages, even if the 2nd page is blank. Merge all the files together then delete the 'blank' page. The page numbers should now display correctly in Adobe Acrobat.

Why is my extracted page as big or almost as big as my original PDF file?

Answer: The usual issue is that the fonts are embedded. To check this, go to File > Document Info > Font Info. There you can tell which fonts are embedded. There is no present function associated with Jaws PDF Editor to remove embedded fonts.
The size of the file may be minimized in Jaws PDF Editor v3.x by doing going to File > Save As and selecting the "Minimize file size" and saving over the original extracted pages.

What is the difference between the Select Text and the Select Paragraph tool?

Answer: The difference between the Select Text tool and the Select Paragraph tool is how the text is grabbed out of the PDF file.
In Jaws PDF Editor v2 and above, the name of these tools have changed to Select Text Line and Select Text Area respectively.
The Select Text [Select Text Line] tool will take text across a page. If you have a multi-column page and you use the Select Text tool, it will grab all the text across the whole page and not keep it separate. If you use the Select Paragraph [Select Text Area] tool, you can grab a single column of text at a time. Neither tool will grab formatting.
